7 things you should know before working with a branding agency
Before you start working on your marketing or branding, get clear on what you actually want out of it. Brand awareness? More leads? More sales? We can build you a great strategy, but we need to know what “great” looks like for you.
Clarity is everything.
Before you start working on your marketing or branding, get clear on what you actually want out of it. Brand awareness? More leads? More sales? We can build you a great strategy, but we need to know what “great” looks like for you.
Here’s an example. Say you come to us wanting social media management, but you don’t tell us the goal is leads. We’ll probably assume you want brand awareness, because that’s the most common ask, and we’ll build a plan around that. A month later you’re back saying “this isn’t working, we’ve had no leads.” If we’d known from the start, we might have pushed more budget into ads instead, because that’s what actually gets leads moving. It could cost more, but at least the money is going toward the right thing.
So tell us your goals, clearly, from day one. We’re good at a lot of things. Mind reading isn’t one of them.

It’s a partnership, not a handover.
This works best when you stay involved. We know branding and marketing, but you know your business better than anyone. Your input is what makes your work actually feel like yours, rather than something we could have handed to any other business in your industry.
Picture ten construction companies coming to us with zero input. No stories, no personality, nothing that makes them different. We’d end up with ten very similar-looking brands. And we’re guessing “blend in with everyone else” isn’t on your goals list.
That’s the bit no shortcut can fix. We use plenty of tools to work faster behind the scenes, but the thinking, the design, the actual creative decisions, that’s still us, sat there properly working through your brand. So let’s build this together. You bring the business knowledge, we bring the branding know-how.

Good things take time.
Branding and marketing aren’t instant. We’re not going to sell you 10,000 followers from accounts that vanish the second the invoice clears. Things like SEO, brand building, and organic social all take real time, sometimes months, sometimes longer. But that patience pays off, because it builds trust.
A small business that’s been quietly consistent for years usually earns more trust than a shiny new one with nothing to show but a good follower count. It’s a bit like a credit score. It builds slowly, through consistent, reliable behaviour over time, not overnight. Your brand works the same way. Stay consistent, and the trust (and the customers) follow.

Communication matters.
Regular check-ins, honest feedback, and being upfront about what’s going well (or not) makes a huge difference. If something feels off, tell us. We’d much rather hear it early and try a different approach than find out three months in that you’ve been quietly unhappy.
Branding and marketing aren’t one size fits all. Sometimes we’ll need to try a few things before something clicks. We’ll work hard to find that as fast as we can, but we can only do that if you talk to us.
Even the best plan can come off the rails with poor communication.

Your brand story is unique. Share it.
The more we understand your values, your tone, and who you’re talking to, the better we can represent you. If you’re worried you’re telling us too much, don’t be, we could probably use more. It’s always better to overshare than undershare. We can sort through what’s useful, but we can’t invent details out of thin air.
And if we’re left guessing, your customers are guessing too. Don’t leave gaps for people to fill in themselves. Don’t be just another blank face in a sea of blank faces. Your team, your story, your business, none of it exists anywhere else. Let it show.

Budget talk is awkward, but it matters.
Nobody loves talking about money, us included. But if we know your budget, we can actually point you toward what will work for it. Want brand awareness but can’t stretch to a new website right now? Fine, there are cheaper routes, like social media management, that still moves you toward the goal.
The only real problem is staying quiet about budget and deciding that’s the end of the conversation. That just puts your goal further out of reach. And just so it’s said clearly: everything you tell us stays between us. No other client, no one else hears what you’re working with.

Trust the experts, but stay in the room.
Trust us, but stay involved. We’ve got years of experience, and if we’re advising a certain direction, it’s because we’ve seen what tends to work, not because we’re being difficult. We want your business to do well just as much as you do. Bad branding helps nobody, least of all us. And a template or a quick auto-generated version of your brand won’t do that either, it takes two people who actually know what they’re looking at.
If you’d rather go a different way after we’ve said our piece, that’s your call, we’ll help you do it. We just want you going in with the full picture.
